The winner of last Nobel Prize for Literature of the twentieth century Guenter Wilhelm Grass (73) is widely regarded as Germany’s greatest living writer. He is the seventh German writer to win the Nobel Prize awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy. Grass was spending his days in the peaceful environment of Belendorf when on 30 September 1999, the Nobel Committee rang him up to convey the good news; he responded smilingly saying he was happy.

The writers and artists of Dhaka were elated at the news of Grass getting the Nobel Prize. They came very close to Grass when he visited Dhaka back in December 1986. But why did Guenter Grass visit Dhaka? It does evoke one’s curiosity. One explanation might be that he had already seen one of the ‘Bengals’ in and out through the powerful lens of his spectacles. He therefore came to Dhaka to discover the pale face of the other Bengal. It was a private trip of seven days duration and was organised by the Goethe Institute of Calcutta and the German Cultural Centre of Dhaka. But how could they keep the mercurial Grass under reins for seven days! The director of the Gultural Centre peter Sewitz decided that Poet Belal Chowdhury would be Grass’ constant companion during the trip. And Belal Chowdhury in tun dinducted Nasir Ali Mamun as the photographer-in-waiting, in order to record the discovery of Dhaka in the eyes of Guenter Grass, That discovery forms the conter of this book.
