দরিদ্র দেশের দরিদ্র পরিবেশে সুন্দরকে খুঁজেই বের করতে হয়। আবার অনেক সময় যখন আমাদের সম্মুখে এসে দাঁড়ায় তখন আমরা তাকে ঠিক চিনতে পারি না। বাঙালির জীবনে ফুলের বেলায় এ আক্ষেপ বোধ হয় অকারণ নয়। বর্তমান গ্রন্থে রয়েছে ৪৪টি বাংলার ফুলের আলোচিত্র। চিত্রগুলো ফুলকে সুন্দররূপে উপস্থাপিত করার জন্য নয়। ফুল আপনিই সুন্দর। তার আসল রূপেই তাকে তুলে ধরবার চেষ্টা করেছেন গ্রন্থকার। রজনীগন্ধা দিয়ে শুরু। শুভ্র বেলা, দোলনচাঁপা, ‍যুঁই, কামিনী, গন্ধরাজের সারি পেরিয়ে সুগন্ধি বকুল, হাসনাহেনা, তারপরে কদম ফুল, মালতী আর কাঠ-মালতীর ঝাঁক। করবী দিয়ে রং-বেরঙের ফুলের ভিড় শুরু। তাতে এসে মিশেছে মাধুরীলতা, রঙন, জবা, গাঁদা, কলকে, কলমি, দোপাটি, অপরাজিতা, সন্ধ্যামালতী, নয়নতারা, কানুর, নীলমণি লতা। কাঠ চম্পা, নাগেশ্বর, জারুল, মোনালুর গাছে রয়েছে পাতার আড়ালে প্রায় লুকিয়ে থাকা চাঁপা, কাঁঠালিচাঁপা, কনকচাঁপা। বসন্ত আসে। কাঞ্চন ফুলে গাছ ছেয়ে যায়। কৃষ্ণচূড়া, পলাশ, শিমুল পারিজাত, অশোক, আফ্রিকান টিউলিপ রঙের হুল্লোড় তুলে আসে। রঙের বাহারের পরে শাপলা ও পদ্মের সজল স্নিগ্ধতা। মেলা শেষ হয় স্নিগ্ধ শিউলিতে। ফুলগুলোর দিকে চেয়ে বাঙালির প্রাণ জুড়াবে এই আশা করি।

This book presents 44 flowers of Bengal in photographs. It has not been the intention of the author to make the flowers look loverly. Rather, he presents them as they are. And they are beautiful. Starting with Rajanigandha. The book first takes you on a visit to a number of pure white flowers. Many of them magnificently fragrant : Beli, Juin, Dolon Champa, Kamini, Gandharaj, through Togor; Malati, Kath Malati, Kadam Kunda and Bakul, most of them blooming in the monsoon. An array of blossons in a variety of colour and mood follows : Karabi, Madhuri, Rangan, Joba Ganda, Kolke, Kolmi, Dopati, Aporajita, Shandhya Malati, Nayantara, Kanur, Neelmonilata, After the showy kath Champa. Nageswar; jarul and Soalu come, half-hidded in the foliage, the fragrant Swarna Champa and Muchkunda. In late spring, a number of flowers burst upon the scene in a riot of colour : in come Krishanchura, Polash, Shimul, Parijat, Ashok, the African Tulip. The dazzle is followed by the quiet and wet beauty of shapla and padma. The selection ends with the delicate, white and orange, and divinely fragrant, shiuli. Bengal is still a land of immense poverty, where beauty often lies unnoticed. This selection of photographs of flowers of Bengal unveils some of that beauty.
